The second Alex started the car, he floored it down the street. The speed was so great that Brianna was actually shoved against the back of her seat. "Oof!"
Calm down! We dont want to get pulled over! she half screamed at Alex once she had recovered from the shock.
Trust me, the police are probably way too busy trying to save themselves right now. They couldn't give a shit about speeding drivers at a time like this. he replied, making a sharp turn onto the main road.
His driving was very erratic and almost reckless. He swerved around every obstacle in the street, almost crashing into other drivers as a result. They were moving so fast that everything around them seemed like a blur. Alex continued to propel down the road, his speed unrelenting. Brianna was confused and tense from paranoia.
Why are you driving like this? she yelled right into his ear.
Flinching at her, he said, The second we slow down, we leave ourselves vulnerable.
Vulnerable to what? she again shouted.
That! he screamed, and Brianna looked up to see a human-like figure in front of their car. It was a zombie
It was dashing straight towards their car. It didnt make any attempt to move out of the way, and neither did Alex. To Brianna's surprise, he actually accelerated, his foot pressing down on the gas pedal as far as it would go. Brianna reached desperately for the steering wheel, trying to veer the car out of the way, but Alex's grip was firm. The car collided with the zombie at full speed, blood and entrails splattering all over their cracked windshield.
You monster! Brianna screamed, hitting Alex in his seat.
That was one of them. If we had slowed down, it would have gotten us both.
Brianna stopped swatting at him, sat back in her seat, and just tried to assess the situation. So they werent just joking around all of these years by collecting guns and training with them. The apocalypse really was happening.
Come here. Alex said, taking one hand off the steering wheel so he could wrap an arm around his horrified wife.
She succumbed to his touch, and just let herself fall into his body, and into his warmth. For a second she felt safe, but the gruesome moment just wouldn't stop replaying in her head; the sound of the zombie's body being broken against their car, their remains being splattered all over their windshield. Alex took his hand out from around her, and flipped on the windshield wipers. The blood became soggy, and was washed away as Brianna drifted into sort of a daze.
With Brianna in his arms, and his mind on the road, Alex maneuvered his way around the fleeing pedestrians and other motorists. He saw very few infected, but it would only be a matter of time until that changed. He knew there was no running, and that all of the people trying to escape would most likely not make it out alive.
Bri, I need your help. Alex said gently to her.
She snapped out of her trance and looked at him questioningly.
"What is it?" she asked.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a holster with the handle of a pistol sticking out.
You remember how to use it right? he asked.
Brianna nodded and took the gun and loaded magazine from him. She popped the clip in expertly and cocked the gun. Alex smiled in amusement. All of the years of teaching her about guns had finally paid off.
Ok, youre gonna need that. Ive been able to swerve around most of them, but its only a matter of time before one finally grabs on, and I need to focus on the road. Just try to hold them off and whatever you do: Don't. hesitate. Were only about 10 minutes away from Tyler's place. He told her, not taking his eyes off the road for a second.
Got it captain. she said with a smirk. She wasn't sure if she was prepared to do something as drastic as taking a human life, and the pressure was starting to get to her.
Alex could see her shaking.
Trust me Bri, they are in much more pain right now than they would be if you just put them out of their misery. You can't be afraid. They're not going to waiver, and neither can you.
Brianna once again nodded at him, and prepared the gun. Almost on cue, another zombie came scrambling towards them on all fours like some sort of rabid animal, it's clothes and body coated in bright maroon blood. It jumped right before the car was about to hit it, and started smashing the windshield. Brianna opened fire.
The head! Aim for the head! Alex screamed, unable to see what he was driving towards.
Brianna took careful aim at the zombies grotesque skull.
"Take this, you ugly bastard!" She shouted as she fired a single round.
The bullet caught the zombie square between the eyes. It slid forward off the hood of the car, and there was a bump as they rode over it. Brianna lowered the gun that still was smoking at the barrel.
Alex once again pulled her close to him and held her tight.
Good gob Bri. Good job. he whispered in her ear.
But had she really done good?
